Continue in pattern as set until scarf measures 3 feet from cast-on edge. Leave stitches on a needle holder, spare needle, or scrap yarn. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail.
(Note: if desired, continue working until scarf measures 6 feet or desired length. Increase 1 stitch on last row of pattern and work 7 rows in 1×1 rib. The pattern will not be symmetrical on each end.)
Make the second half of the scarf the same way. Be sure to end in the same place as for the first half.
Grafting
Kitchener stitch for grafting knit stitches:
Thread yarn tail through DN. Hold knitting needles with stitches to be grafted so that one needle is in front of the other, with RS of work facing out.
Set up: Pass DN through the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl. Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if you knit.
(Pass DN through first stitch on front needle as if to knit and drop it off needle. Pass DN through next stitch on front needle as if to purl.
Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if to purl and drop it off needle. Pas DN through next stitch on back needle as if to knit.)
Repeat instructions in (parentheses) to graft together knit stitches.
Kitchener stitch for grafting purl stitches:
Thread yarn tail through DN. Hold knitting needles to be grafted so that one needle is in front of the other, RS facing out.
Set up: Pass DN through first stitch on front needle as if to knit. Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if to purl.
(Pass DN through first stitch on front needle as if to purl and drop it off needle. Pass DN through next stitch on front needle as if to knit.
Pass DN through first stitch on back needle as if to knit and drop it off needle. Pass DN through next stitch on back needle as if to purl.)
Repeat instructions in (parentheses) to graft purl stitches.
Finishing
Put the two halves of the scarf onto knitting needles so that when the two halves are held with their WS together, both needles are pointed to the right and the one of the yarn tails is on the right side.
Use kitchener stitch to graft the two halves together. When grafting combinations of knit and purl stitches, use appropriate instructions. Set up instructions for kitchener stitch need only be followed at the beginning of a row.
Weave in ends. Block if desired.
